What Is A Mini Dental Implant?

A Mini Dental Implant (MDI) is a miniature titanium screw that acts like the root of your tooth.  The 'minis' get their name because they are very thin.  Mini implants are a class of implants less than three millimeters in diameter but most are about two millimeters.  Mini implants have a sharp tip and very thin threads similar to a machine screw.  The surface of the threaded portion looks dull because it is roughened to increase surface area and better heal to the bone.  The top portion of the MDI has a shiny polished collar, cubic connector and a sphere or ball shape on the top.  The Cube is a spacer for the sphere to connect into the retentive element on the denture.  The retentive element is sometimes referred to as a o-ball housing.  The o-ball housing is a metal cap with a rubber disk shaped gasket that is removable and can be replaced as it wears out.  The housing stays in the denture and gasket maintenance can be performed easily and quickly by the implant dentist.  Mini implants may also be used in certain situations to connect or cement to a crown or bridge.  This allows them to be fixed in place and not needed to be removed like a denture.  Mini implants may replace one or more teeth and possibly an entire arch of teeth!

How Are Mini Dental Implants Made?

All dental implants are generally made in the same way.  Swiss style turning mills spin long rods of titanium alloy through a computer controlled process.  This is often referred to as "CAD-CAM" or Computer Aided Design-Computer Aided Machining.  The threaded portion of the implant belongs below the bone level and has a special surface treatment that helps the bone heal to the implant.  The special surface is created by sand blasting with a special material and then cleaned off with an acid in the manufacturing facility.  Implants are then sterilized by radiation which is preferred to heat to maintain the strength of the implants.  Packaging and labeling is accomplished under sterile conditions and tracking numbers attached to the implantable devices for safety.

What Are The Benefits of Mini Dental Implants?

Dental implants must be placed surrounded by solid bone but many people who have missing teeth or edentulism suffer from bone resorption.  As the bone is lost and gets thinner over time standard diameter implants (over 3.5 mm) can not be properly fit into the jaw without long term problems.  That is why the surgeon will recommend bone grafting to add bone thickness or width.  Bone grafting can add significant costs to the implant procedure and may double or triple treatment time.  Mini dental implants can be used in bone of almost any thickness and does not require grafting.  This decreases treatment time and costs.  Mini implants can also be placed in a minimally invasive manor which decreases healing time and discomfort.  Only small pinholes are placed into the bone and the implants are placed gently by hand instruments.  There is often no need for cutting of the gums or stitches.

More Mini Implant Information:

Mini dental implants are 'mini' because they are less than half the  diameter of a regular dental implant. This offers many benefits, and they can also be used in situations where regular implants cannot. If an implant needs to be placed in a narrow space, mini implants are the preferred method because of their smaller size.

A main use for mini implants is to install a full upper or lower denture. A series of mini implants (4-6) are placed along the gum line and they serve as the base of the denture. Rather than placing a single implant for a single tooth, an entire lower or upper set of teeth are directly attached to the gum line.

The small size of mini implants often means that no incision needs to be made to place the implant. They can usually be inserted right through the gum into the bone. This eliminates the need for a recovery period, and the restoration can usually be placed right away or only a short time after.

Mini implants are also less expensive than regular implants. Only your dentist knows if mini implants are right for you, so call for your consultation today.
